Freedom From Chronic Pain & Symptoms
with a Psychological Approach

MindBody Practitioner
Hi! My name is Emily and I had chronic pain & symptoms for 4.5 years. It moved all over my body and I was desperate for answers but the only thing I got from conventional doctors was misdiagnoses, medical trauma, and endless bills. In this span of time, I had the following symptoms and "injuries" without doing anything to become injured: • Cubital tunnel syndrome • Golfer’s elbow in both arms • Small fiber neuropathy • Nerve pains • TMJ disorder • Burning mouth syndrome • Inner knee pain and swelling • Proximal hamstring tendinopathy (sit bone pain) • Plantar fasciitis in both feet • Sciatica • Piriformis syndrome • Low back pain • Hip pain • Headaches/Migraines • Raynaud’s Disease • Chilblains
The MindBody Syndrome
Knowing what I know now, these “injuries” and symptoms were TMS. TMS stands for Tension Myositis Syndrome, Tension Myoneural Syndrome, The MindBody Syndrome, and Neuroplastic pain. All being the same thing, but as years went on from Dr. John Sarno’s initial discovery of the syndrome, verbiage changed with more research that was done.

What causes TMS?
TMS is pain or symptoms created by the brain, not due to a structural issue. This occurs when unconscious repressed emotions begin to surface. The brain interprets these emotions as unsafe and attempts to protect you by distracting you with pain or other symptoms. As a result, your focus shifts away from the emotions themselves and onto the discomfort in your body.
Fear is also a major driver of TMS. During my chronic pain journey, I became fearful of my body, daily activities, the medical system, and even the pain itself. When the brain perceives potential danger, it can misfire pain signals in an attempt to keep us safe, even when there is no real threat.
In addition, certain personality traits can make someone more susceptible to TMS. Traits such as perfectionism, people-pleasing, and overachieving often lead to intense self-pressure, lack of self-compassion, and disconnection from personal values in order to avoid rejection. This inner conflict fuels emotional stress that the brain may try to suppress with physical symptoms.
Ultimately, all of these factors—repressed emotions, fear, and personality traits—send signals to the brain that there is danger. The brain, in turn, produces pain and symptoms as a protective mechanism. This creates a cycle where the brain feels unsafe, symptoms persist, and the mind remains caught in a state of hyper-vigilance.
The good news is: we don't have to stay stuck in this cycle. The brain is changeable, and you are capable of teaching it that you're safe. With the right tools and support, it's possible to calm the nervous system, release the fear around symptoms, and overcome chronic pain - allowing you to return to a life of freedom!
