When our chronic pain or symptoms spark up fear, it is important to redirect the thoughts that come along with that fear. As long as we continue to dwell in the fear, the symptoms will persist. When we redirect to statements of reassurance and clarity, this brings us back to safety. When we feel safe and clearly communicate that we are safe to the brain, the symptoms eliminate. These are some of my go to statements when symptoms appear 🫶🏼

Once I discovered TMS and truly believed that walking is a benign activity (we were created to walk and be on our feet), I started challenging my foot pain whenever it came on🦶🏼I have a history of “plantar fasciitis” which I now know was TMS all this time. I was being hypervigilant about how long I was standing, how far I was walking, what type of shoes I was wearing, and never going barefoot before I found TMS

This has worked for me, so I am sharing it with you! If you feel you need a slower approach, graded exposure is helpful to start with. I initially used graded exposure and slowly increased time walking and on my feet while sending my brain messages of safety. Now, if I get any type of foot sensation I immediately go to my treadmill and tell my brain “we are going to walk until it doesn’t hurt anymore”. This works every time. After a few minutes of being stubborn about it and showing my brain that walking is safe by doing it, the pain eliminates 🙌🏼 showing myself compassion during by stating things like “good job Emily I’m so proud of you for challenging this” also contributes 🥰 this approach can be applied for any pain, not just foot pain! ✨

I initially used graded exposure and slowly increased time walking and on my feet while sending my brain messages of safety. Things are labeled as chronic just because they have not improved within a certain timeframe. Most of the treatments suggested by healthcare professionals are physical modalities. The first photo is how I traveled for years because of the sit bone pain I had. I avoided sitting at all costs not wanting to make the pain worse (back when I thought there was something structurally wrong). The second photo is now, on hour 6 of driving and have sat the entire time with no pain 🙌🏼

The difference between then and now? My brain now feels safe 🧠♥️

Do you have a hard time setting boundaries with others? You are not alone, especially in this community! Those with TMS struggle with this. We tend to put other’s wants and needs before our own, making sure to keep the peace 😔

What about our wants and needs? When are these fulfilled? Our wants and needs are important and realigning with them throughout your healing journey will be beneficial 🥰

If you tend to go to events that you really don’t want to go to just to make others happy for example, aligning with what you truly want and kindly declining the invitation because it isn’t something you want to do will help fulfill your wants

Setting boundaries with others takes practice and courage! We often feel guilty if we go against what someone else wants, but you should be your first priority, and the other person should completely understand and be supportive of your decisions if they truly want the best for you. Celebrate when you do set these boundaries, over time it’ll start to feel really good to do so!

Think back to a year ago and recognize the progress you’ve made. Being aware of the positive changes you’ve encountered is important. I am so proud of you for the effort you’ve put into healing. This work is not easy and it takes time, but you are so capable and are on the right path ♥️

This time last year I was basically bedbound, in severe pain all over my body, and hopeless. Even just discovering TMS this year is a gigantic win after years and years of searching for answers. Being recovered now is the cherry on top. I am so grateful for this past year and I’m also extremely proud of myself. Not only did I put in the work to heal from my chronic symptoms, but I started a business and now guide others through their healing! What a beautiful outcome ✨

Throughout my years of chronic symptoms, I never suspected my brain was the culprit. I was so focused on structural issues, just as the medical system teaches us to do 🫠

By changing our mindset and beliefs, we can show the brain that we are safe and do not need protection with chronic symptoms. Once the brain truly believes we are safe, the symptoms will decrease and eventually eliminate. How amazing is this?! 🧠✨

A common theme with people who have TMS is that they lack self compassion. They are typically hard on themselves and put others needs before their own 💔

Bringing self compassion into your life is an important part of the healing process. Self compassion brings safety and safety brings reduction and elimination of chronic symptoms 👏🏼

My typical self compassion exercises are writing nice letters to myself, speaking out loud nice things about myself and stating how proud I am of myself, talking to my inner child telling her that she is safe and loved, and giving myself a big hug! 🤗

After a discussion between my beautiful client and I, I had the urge to write a letter to the notebook that I previously tracked all my negative experiences in over my 4.5 years of chronic pain 📝

I hadn’t touched it since discovering TMS as I made a promise to myself to stop tracking how my symptoms are feeling or progressing. When I looked back at some of the things that I had written over the years, I was in a very dark place. I wanted to write in the notebook one last time to tell my happy ending 🥹

✨MY STORY✨Throughout 4.5 years of chronic pain, I had the following symptoms and “injuries”:
o Cubital tunnel syndrome
o Golfer’s elbow in both arms
o TMJ disorder
o Burning mouth syndrome
o Inner knee pain and swelling
o Proximal hamstring tendinopathy (sit bone pain)
o Neuropathy
o Plantar fasciitis in both feet
o Sciatica
o Piriformis syndrome
o Low back pain
o Hip pain
o Headaches/Migraines
o Raynaud’s Disease
o Chilblains
Knowing what I know now, these “injuries” and symptoms were TMS (the MindBody syndrome, tension myositis syndrome, neuroplastic pain). During my chronic pain journey I became terrified of my body, the medical system, and the pain itself. I also have a long history of repressing my emotions and lacking self-compassion. The brain often misfires pain signals when it perceives danger to try to protect us.
When I learned of TMS, I was at rock bottom. I jumped right into the work (a psychological approach) and within weeks 90% of my pain areas were gone. Around 2 months, I was pain free. Now, I want to share my knowledge with you to help you overcome your chronic pain or symptoms!

Knowing what I know now, these “injuries” and symptoms were TMS (the MindBody syndrome, tension myositis syndrome, neuroplastic pain). During my chronic pain journey I became terrified of my body, the medical system, and the pain itself. I also have a long history of repressing my emotions and lacking self-compassion. The brain often misfires pain signals when it perceives danger to try to protect us.
When I learned of TMS, I was at rock bottom. I jumped right into the work (a psychological approach) and within weeks 90% of my pain areas were gone. Around 2 months, I was pain free. Now, I want to share my knowledge with you to help you overcome your chronic pain or symptoms!
Along with going through & overcoming my own chronic pain journey, I have received an Associate’s and Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and am a certified TMS Practitioner.

It’s important to have a self-care routine to keep your balance. This routine can include activities that make you feel safe, calm, grounded, at peace.

Here’s my routine:

1️⃣ Before getting out of bed, I talk to my brain. My usual phrase is “good morning brain, we are going to have a good day today without any pain”

2️⃣ After I get ready for the day, I do a 15 minute meditation before starting work

3️⃣ I walk at least a mile per day. Depending on the weather, this is either outdoors with my dog or indoors on my treadmill

3 steps to recover from chronic pain or symptoms 💪🏼

1️⃣ Understand that the brain creates symptoms when it senses danger

Educating yourself on TMS (the MindBody syndrome) by reading books, watching YouTube videos, listening to podcasts, or joining a program such as my own is an important step to recovery. You must fully understand TMS to be able to recover from it

2️⃣ Determine if your symptoms align with MindBody characteristics

There are a ton of free quizzes out there on Google that can help you determine whether your symptoms are MindBody (TMS) in origin. I also have ‘Signs of TMS’ listed in my highlights and in my linktree in my bio

3️⃣ Teach your brain that you are safe, which results in symptoms eliminating

There can be many aspects that play into making you/the brain feel safe. The main ones are removing doubt of any structural issues, conquering any fears you’ve acquired over the time of having chronic symptoms and no longer filtering your activities, processing past traumas and refraining from repressing emotions, and engaging in self compassion, truly accepting yourself for who you are, as well as putting less pressure on yourself and refraining from self-criticizing.

Once you understand that TMS applies to you, it is important to disconnect from these previous diagnoses and labels. Continuing to identify with them will hold you back from recovering ❤️‍🩹

I thought I was broken, but that wasn’t true. I was just scared. I do not resonate with any of these diagnoses anymore, I do not have them and never did. It was TMS all along 🙌🏼
